Above the tile is a white plastic material with a slightly rough texture. It is solid to the wall. I would like to install new tile directly over this material so the bath tile can run all the way to the ceiling. If existing tiles are beyond repair remove the tile and install a piece of wallboard in its place.

Whenever installing tile in any area of your house you need a special substrate or base layer. What all tiles share is the need for a good base or substrate the material to which the tile is fastened with mortar or mastic cement. A substrate has to be level on a floor or plumb on a wall. Choosing the right tile substrate that fits into your waterproofing strategy will be a key factor in ensuring your shower walls provide a stable surface for your tile installation while also doing it s part for moisture management.

The tile substrate is going to be the most important component of your installed shower walls. The tile shop carries the materials needed to lay the groundwork for your project. A successful tile installation project starts with a smooth solid base or substrate the level material surface the tile is bonded to using tile adhesives or tile mortar. For wall installations plywood is overkill beneath the concrete or fiber board which is designed in five eighths inch material for wall settings.

The preferred method for tile installations is to use a sheet of underlayment. Wash the wall with tsp tri sodium phosphate or an ammonia based cleaner to remove any grease or oil. Repair any loose or cracked tiles. New wall tile designs allow you to mimic wood concrete or other looks. Plasterboard is a very common indoor wall surface but is not suitable for tiling without waterproofing. To do so make sure all of the tiles are intact and secure. Ceramic and porcelain tile more than almost any other surface material needs a stable flat flex free substrate. Tiling over plasterboard involves adhering tiles to a paper surface and although this will present little problem in dry areas if the wallboard is subjected to moisture it may deteriorate causing failure.

The tile runs up about 36 above the tub. In showers the standard substrate is tile backer also called cement board or cement backer board. I know the proper way is to have a dur rock substrate but that isn t going to happen.
